AhlulBayt News Agency: Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has declared Palestine the most dangerous place in the world for journalists, citing the Israeli regime’s ongoing genocidal war in Gaza and systematic targeting of media professionals.
In its latest report published on Friday, RSF revealed that nearly 200 journalists have been killed in the first 18 months of the war, including 42 who were slain while reporting on the ground. The organization highlighted the dire conditions for journalists trapped in Gaza, who lack shelter, food, and water due to Israel’s blockade and relentless attacks.
RSF further warned that Israel legitimizes crimes against journalists, fostering an environment of impunity. “In the West Bank, reporters face routine harassment and assaults by both settlers and Israeli forces. However, repression escalated dramatically after October 7, with mass arrests and a new rule of impunity for crimes committed against the press.”
The watchdog noted that press freedom worldwide is under greater threat than ever before, classifying the current global situation as “difficult” in its World Press Freedom Index for the first time in history.
The report also pointed to the deteriorating state of media freedom in the United States. RSF criticized President Donald Trump’s handling of the press, stating that his administration is overseeing a disturbing decline in journalistic independence. “During his reelection campaign, Trump repeatedly attacked the media and threatened to use federal agencies as tools against journalists,” the organization stated.
RSF warned that Trump’s early moves in his second term—such as politicizing the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), banning The Associated Press from the White House, and dismantling the US Agency for Global Media—are undermining American press institutions and could trigger a full-blown crisis in journalism.
